Abstract

The 1928-1974 Indonesian women movement demanding domestic and marriage rights equality is analyzed due to the frequent oppressions and discriminations happened to woman in their domestic life. The oppression happened both physically and psychologically. Paradigm and image of Indonesian women as soft creation had caused the violence occurrence in Indonesia. The forms of oppressions involve polygamy, one side divorce and domestic violence which also frequently happen today. Besides that, the understanding of theorem as well as cultural construction seemed to legalize the oppressions that lead to the right equality movement to make women’s position better. This research will answer research problem, that is the reason behind the woman movement demanding domestic and marriage right equality and how their struggle to realize it. The objective of this research is to know the reason of Indonesian woman movement and the way to realize it. The method used in this research is historical research method through some stages: heuristic (collecting some sources both primary and secondary), critics (validity test toward the sources attained in heuristic stage), and interpretation (connect one fact with another through religion, social and cultural approach) and historiography (stage of writing the research result so that the result can be seen by others). The result of this research is the description of the reason toward the Indonesian woman movement that is the frequent discrimination and oppression toward women by men in domestic life such as polygamy, forced marriage, young age marriage, and one side divorce by husband. These actions happen due to the misperception of theorems by the husbands who interpret them without paying attention to the context. The forms of the Indonesian women movement demanding their right occurred in some stages. The stages were begun from pre movement stage signed by Kartinis’ letters demanding education for women. The second stage was awakening stage in which women built the awareness toward their position and role through press. The third stage was movement building stage in which they formed some organizations for women in many areas of Indonesia. The next stage was influencing stage, here, the women influence their target by holding congress to influence government as target to warrant the women’s right in marriage. The result of the movement can be realized by the outcome stage, that is law marriage (Undang-Undang Perkawinan No.1 tahun 1974).
