Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of language styles used by the main character and the factors that make the main character have language styles in Upgraded Movie. The data was taken from the utterances of Ana Santos as the main character in Upgraded Movie. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method based on Joos' theory (1976), there are five language styles, namely frozen style, formal consultative style, casual style, and intimate style. Based on Holmes' theory (1992), there are four factors that influence the use of language style, namely setting, topic, participants, and function. The results of this research show that there are 129 data utterances by Ana Santos as the main character in Upgraded Movie. The researcher only found four type of language style, there are intimate style (21), consultative style (29), casual style (80), and formal style (32). Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the factors that make the main character have a language style are the setting, topic, participants, and function. The language styles found in this research will provide an academic contribution to the development of language styles used to communicate.
