Abstract
This study explores the information literacy competency (ILC) of undergraduate students at STKIP PGRI Sidoarjo and its impact on thesis writing quality. Using a qualitative multiple-case study approach, the research involved eight students across four departments, selected based on the highest and lowest plagiarism check results. Data were collected through questionnaires and self-assessments aligned with the five information literacy standards by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). Findings reveal significant gaps in students’ abilities to access, evaluate, and integrate information effectively, despite high self-reported confidence. Students demonstrated basic awareness of their information needs and ethical practices but struggled with advanced search strategies, source credibility assessment, and argumentative synthesis. These deficiencies contribute to high similarity percentages in thesis writing, particularly in Chapter I. The study highlights a mismatch between institutional expectations and students’ IL preparedness. It recommends curriculum integration of IL across semesters, interdisciplinary workshops, assessment rubrics based on IL standards, and expanded access to academic resources. Strengthening ILC is crucial for enhancing academic writing outcomes and fostering ethical, independent scholarship in higher education.
