Abstract
This study explores the perceptions of English students at UNIPDA regarding the role of vocabulary mastery in reading comprehension. Vocabulary plays a crucial role in understanding written texts, and students' views on its importance can influence their learning strategies and reading outcomes. This qualitative research involved semi-structured interviews with selected students from the English Education Department. Thematic analysis was used to identify recurring patterns and themes in the subjects' responses. The findings reveal that most students perceive vocabulary mastery as essential for grasping the main ideas and details in reading texts. Several factors influence these perceptions, including personal learning experiences, peer influence, motivation, and exposure to English through media and academic activities. The study concludes that a strong vocabulary base significantly contributes to reading comprehension and suggests that vocabulary development should be emphasized in English language instruction.
