Abstract

This study was motivated by the need to improve students’ mastery of English vocabulary through engaging and accessible digital learning media. The Duolingo application was selected as the learning medium due to its gamification-based approach, which is believed to enhance student motivation and engagement. The aim of this research was to explore students' perceptions of using the Duolingo application in learning English vocabulary. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects were 8th-grade students of MTs. Al-Hikmah who had used the Duolingo application during their learning process. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, which allowed students to express their experiences, opinions, and the challenges they encountered while using the application. Data analysis was carried out by transcribing, coding, and categorizing the results into four main themes: students’ perceptions, motivation, experiences, and challenges. The findings revealed that most students had a positive perception of Duolingo, describing it as enjoyable and effective in helping them remember new vocabulary. Gamification features such as points, levels, and rewards contributed to their learning motivation. However, students also faced challenges such as boredom due to repetitive content, difficulty in understanding instructions or pronunciation, and technical issues like internet access and lack of personal devices. Duolingo can serve as an effective learning tool to support English vocabulary mastery.
