Abstract

This study aims to analyze the hate speech that appears in user comments on the Middle East Eye Instagram account regarding the Palestinian and Israeli conflict. This research uses a pragmatic approach with Searle's (1969) Speech Act theory to identify the types of utterances, as well as Tajfel and Turner's (1979) Social Identity Theory to find out the factors that cause the emergence of hate speech. The method used is qualitative with content analysis technique. The data were taken from comments on Middle East Eye's Instagram posts during 2022-2025. The results showed that the most used type of speech act was assertive, followed by expressive and directive. Social factors that trigger hate speech include hostility towards other groups, a sense of threat, and moral justification. This research shows that hate speech on social media is not only triggered by emotions, but also by social identity conflicts and the way users interpret an event.
