Abstract
This study investigated how group discussions assisted students in developing their speaking confidence. The aims of this research were to explain how group discussion could foster students’ speaking confidence and to describe students’ perceptions of group discussion as a method to build their confidence in speaking courses. Data were obtained using a descriptive qualitative method, including field notes, interviews, and recordings. The study focused on classroom observations during group discussion activities, followed by interviews with students to explore their experiences and reflections. The findings indicated that group discussions fostered a supportive and collaborative environment in which students gained greater confidence in speaking. They steadily improved their speaking ability, clarity, fluency, and willingness to communicate. Moreover, students reported feeling more relaxed and motivated to participate, as the group format reduced their fear of making mistakes. The peer support and frequent opportunities to express ideas contributed significantly to students’ positive attitudes toward speaking English. These findings confirmed prior research that had identified group discussion as an effective and meaningful method for developing speaking confidence among EFL learners.
