Abstract

This research was conducted to find out contains a self-concept that can motivate students to study hard so that it can be applied in real life everyday from Akeelah and The Bee Movie. This research uses a qualitative method. The primary data used in this research is all utterances containing or describing self concept in Akeelah and The Bee Movie, namely Akeelah Anderson and Dr. Joshua Larabee. The researcher analyzed the movie using the positive self-concept theory by Hamachek (1995) and Rakhmat & Jalaluddin (2007). While on the type of negative self concept, the researcher analyzed the movie using self-concept theory by William D Brooks & Phillip Emmert (1976) and Rakhmat & Jalaluddin (2007) and supported by pessimist theory by Nugroho (2013), and sensitive to criticism theory by Robert A Baron & Don Byrne (2003). The results of the study found that positive self-concept consists of five kinds, namely solve problems, self improve, confidence, self belief, and equality. While the negative self-concept consists of four kinds, namely hypercritical attitude, pessimist, sensitive to criticism, and feeling disliked.
